I decided to do some paintings inspired by faery tales, such as Grimm's. this is the first finished of these (though is in fact not the first one, which is still unfinished). I'd like to do a child's illustrated storybook, perhaps with other artists, though it's unlikely that will happen, it's what inspired taking my art in this direction.
For this, I thought "What would Rapunzel's life be like if she had cats?" the picture tells a thousand words, despite her apparent patience. Since the story (I re-read the original in my very antique copy of Grimm's Hausmärchen just before sketching this) tells us she was prisoner to a witch, one of the cats is black, and there is a potted belladonna plant in the room; two reminders that she doesn't live alone.
I actually had to create a new set of Photoshop brushes for this. Her braids were done this way, though I only used them on the sketch layer, and hand drew the outlines over this layer. I Haven't decided yet whether or not I'm going to upload those yet, they do work well as is (and I've used them for the outline on another piece I'm working on), but need more work. My kitty makes his third memorial appearance in this piece (the black cat), and my kitten (the gold cat) Goldilocks was a mental model for this as well.
